Who Is Unemployed- A, B and C Players
Who Is Unemployed- A, B and C Players In order to be the best job seeker possible, you need an understanding of what is going on in the heads of hiring professionals. In the current economic situation, with hundreds of thousands of people out of work, how can theoverwhelmed HR professionals and recruiters possibly handle the volume of resumes they receive? Well, thats sort of a related question. On Nick Corcodoliss, Ask the Headhunter, he sited and summarized Why hiring is paradoxically harder in a downturn by Auren Hoffman. Heres my take away from reading Hoffmans piece: The world of work is made up a A, B, and C Players. (A players are the best and C players do the job). Of course, most companies want to hire A players. The other important fact is that there are more B players than A players and even more C players than B. This makes A players scarce. When layoffs occur, usually the C players are let go first. The company will try and hold on to A players, yet that isnt always possible. (i.e. Construction,Financial and Legal industries were hit hard and all players lost their jobs despite how well they performed) The challenge now for companies is to find the A Players among the see of B and C Players applying for jobs. The resume isnt the greatest tool to use in screening these players. An A player is innovative and hard working and their resume demonstrates that with accomplishments. NOT the words innovative and hard working. The otherlesson here is that you want to be known forbeing an A Player, not a slacker. Do whatever you can do to change the way you do your job to become an A Player!

Are You Putting Your Resumes In The Right Places
Are You Putting Your Resumes In The Right Places Have you ever gone past a series of modern windmills? I just did recently-they were amazing. At first, they dont look real. Then as you get closer, they begin to loom in jaw-dropping proportions because they are huge. These gigantic pinwheels are carefully placed to catch the wind in the best spots available. A lot of study goes into how tall they need to be, where they should be located, and which direction they should face. This is because they are very expensive to manufacture and install so they need to be where they will catch the most wind and generate the most power. Why would anybody put this expensive piece of technology in a random spot because it is easier? No matter how well the windmill is constructed, it will not do what its designed to do if its not in the right place. A well-crafted resume is the result of a similar type of investment. Just like the modern windmill, they are carefully designed and can be expensive to create. So why distribute that resume in a random pattern because it is easier? If your resume is not being put in the right place, it will not be able to do what its designed to do. Professional Resume Services has the ability to put your resume in the place where it will be most effective through our Recruiter Resume Distributions. Since we maintain a database that is updated weekly, we know which recruiters are working in the various industries out there and we can specifically target your unique preferences and project parameters. We will only put your resume where it will act like one of those high-tech pinwheels and generate the most energy for your career goals.

How to Enjoy Your Vacation and Not Feel Guilty
How to Enjoy Your Vacation and Not Feel Guilty By all accounts, Iceland is one of the most magical places on Earth: A landscape of soaring glaciers, lava fields, steaming hot springs and black-sand beaches. And Mina Black could not focus on any of it. The 36-year-old financial planner from New York took a trip there this summer with her husband and new daughter. But for some reason, she was wracked with guilt about everything she needed to be doing back home: Contacting clients and prospects, putting together new workshops â" even just doing regular chores around the house. She spent most of the trip making sure she had Wifi so she would be connected to all her tasks back home. That pervasive sense of guilt is familiar to many of us. Even when it makes no logical sense â" Mina Black fully deserved her vacation time â" we are still haunted by the idea that we should be doing something else. Indeed, 42% of Americans report they frequently feel guilty about relaxing, according to a new survey by Princess Cruises. That is up from 38% last year. Most ironic of all, a third of us get stressed just at the thought of relaxing. Why? âIn America we have such a strong work ethic, that we have a hard time justifying allowing ourselves to relax,â says Dr. Susan Whitbourne, a psychology professor at University of Massachusetts Amherst (ironically, reached during her vacation on Cape Cod, Massachusetts). This guilt is seeping into our vacation-taking habits. The number of vacation days Americans take has sunk to 16 days a year â" an all-time low, reports the âAll Work No Payâ study by the U.S. Travel Association. Thatâs almost a full workweek less than historic norms. In fact 135 million Americans have not taken any vacation at all in the past year, according to a survey by Allianz Global Assistance. A few tips to get rid of the guilt and savor your much-needed down time: 1. Admit you are not indispensable. Part of our guilt stems from our belief that we are so critical to the operation of our workplace. So here is a hard truth: We are not. If we are out of the office for a few days, the sun will continue to rise and our workplace will continue to function. It is bosses who need to set the example, says Whitbourne. If they take days off, then others will, too. âItâs the norm everywhere in the world, except the U.S.â This is a trickier issue for freelancers, who get paid by the hour or the project, and make up an increasing percentage of the American workforce. If you have to work while away, at least compartmentalize it, suggests Whitbourne. âGet it out of the way, and then really enjoy your family time, because the experience will make you better,â she says. 2. Realize recharging is as important as working. Smart companies know this. One study by software firm Intuit, for instance, revealed that 82 percent of small business owners reported increased job performance after taking a vacation. 3. Get creative. Business owner David Demming of Aurora, Ohio felt âvacation guiltâ so deeply that he did not take one for 15 whole years. Finally, he came up with an innovative solution: Take clients on trips with him. Now he has enjoyed jaunts for skiing and scuba diving, without feeling a lick of guilt. His most recent getaway was for multiple clients and their family members to âDiverâs Paradise,â the island of Bonaire in the Dutch Caribbean. Heres How My Wildlife Enthusiasm and Love of Adventure Make Me a Successful Chief Risk Officer
Heres How My Wildlife Enthusiasm and Love of Adventure Make Me a Successful Chief Risk Officer In the freezing waters off the coast of South Africa, Mandy Norton climbed into a steel cage as great white sharks swam nearby. Moments later, the cage lowered and she entered their world. It welches exhilarating, recalled Norton, a wildlife enthusiast, lover of adventure and the chief risk officer of Wells Fargo. Ive always had a fascination with sharks, so to swim or dive with them welches what Id guess you would call one of my bucket list items. However, even therbeie, nearly 8,000 miles from home, amid some of natures most wondrous and dangerous creatures, risk management still came into play, she said. Norton had done the risk-reward calculus, studied shark behavior, researched the turs safety record, assessed her potential exposure and conducted other due diligence.Norton brought that fearless perspective and energy with her to Wells Fargo in June, when she became the first female chi ef risk officer for a major U.S. bank. Her arrival comes at a crucial time as the bank works through a sweeping inventory to find and fix problems, do whats right for customers and build a better bank for the future.Norton is tasked with taking Wells Fargos risk management program to the next level and proving its excellence to a watching world including customers, team members, shareholders, regulators, industry analysts and the general public. Demonstrating an industry-leading risk management framework is among the primary six goals of Wells Fargo set forth after Tim Sloan assumed the role of CEO in October 2016.Norton is quick to acknowledge Wells Fargo had already made substantial progress in improving its risk controls when she came aboard. She noted important changes, including the centralization of company functions such as technology and human resources, establishment of a centralized and independent risk management function, elimination of retail sales goals and sales-base d incentives and placement of new leaders in key positions.Theres been a terrific amount of work thats already been done before I got here, in terms of getting everyone working toward the saatkorn goal in our risk management program, Norton said. What I am trying to do is leverage this work to build out a fully integrated and holistic risk management framework that provides clear direction, clarity for roles and responsibilities and a structured and disciplined governance infrastructure which essentially provides the road map for all team members to use while managing risk in their daily activities. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the delivery of the best possible service and experience for our customers. From mathematician to bankerNortons career path to the banking profession may landseem like an improbable one. Born, raised and educated in the United Kingdom, her father was an aeronautical engineer who taught her discipline, loyalty and love of the sciences her mother is a retired nurse who taught me compassion, the importance of balance and how to have fun, she said.Norton studied and excelled in mathematics at the University of Bath, one of Britains top universities, and graduated with a bachelors degree in 1989. Years later, she established a University of Bath scholarship bearing her name that is awarded each year to a top female mathematics student from a low- or moderate-income family. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the delivery of the best possible service and experience for our customers. Mandy NortonI feel passionately about the opportunities I enjoyed at the University, she said. Giving back is my way of ensuring that current Bath students can have the same opportunities I had.So how did she transform from a mathematician into a banker? The first step came when she attended some recruiting presentations by banks and other companies looking to hire new graduates.I was struck with the idea of how I could use the discipline of mathematics and apply it to financial services, she said. Im also a partie who very much wears her heart on her sleeve. I love working with people, love learning from people. So in the financial services industry, you get to hone your softer skills in areas such as thought leadership, reasoning, influencing and helping people. I found it a natural progression from mathematics to banking.Coming to AmericaNearly 30 years later, Nortons career has taken her from the U.K. across the Atlantic Ocean to America, with stints at Bank of America and Ally Financial, before joining JPMorgan Chase, where she held positions as its chief risk officer in mortgage banking and consumer and community banking.Nortons personal energy, in-depth senior management experience in risk management at large financial institutions and singular commitment to customers made her an ideal choice for Wells Fargo, said CEO Tim Sloan.Whenever we look at adding leaders to the WellsFargo team, we look first for a great fit with ou r company and with our culture and then how well that person will advance our business, he said. Mandy was a natural on both fronts. To be thought of as an inspiration by friends and colleagues is just extraordinarily flattering. Mandy NortonShe is very focused on serving customers in the most risk-appropriate way, which supports our vision to help them succeed financially, Sloan added. And you only need to talk with her for a few minutes to see that she is also a great match with our values the highest ethical standards and a laser focus on customers, just to name two. When she was offered the job at WellsFargo, Norton said there was no hesitation. In the companys regulatory issues, she saw an opportunity to rise to the challenge, not a cause for concern, she said.WellsFargo is a great company. I was flattered to be considered for the job, Norton said. Quite honestly, just about every large institution and many others have faced somewhat similar challenges, from a regulatory perspec tive or otherwise. So for me, I just felt like it was a great opportunity that I could potentially come and be helpful, having been through a cycle like that with other companies. One huge benefit of moving to the U.S. was meeting Kathy, now her life partner of 15 years, whom she describes as her biggest supporter, my biggest advocate.Shes there for me on bad days, and shes there for me when I come home excited about something that Im really proud of, Norton said. I categorically know that I wouldnt be who I am today, professionally or personally, without her support. And the successes Ive enjoyed are in a very large part due to her. I couldnt have a better partner in life.A risk officers risk officerWells Fargos selection of Norton was an impressive and impactful one, especially given whats at stake for the company as it seeks to meet the regulators requirements and lift the asset growth cap, said Duke Bristow, an economist at the University of Southern California and one of the top corporate governance influencers in the U.S., according to the National Association of Corporate Directors. It is extremely important for WellsFargo to have picked someone like Mandy Norton, he said. Those who will critique its action will have a difficult time not thinking of Mandy as a risk officers risk officer. She is that deep and experienced in risk management. I think if you would call central casting and ask them to send you someone for the risk officers role, Mandy would be the one whod show up.I was struck with the idea of how I could use the discipline of mathematics and apply it to financial services. Mandy NortonFormer banker Stanley Smith, a banking professor emeritus at the University of Central Florida, said Nortons credibility in the industry can be a boost to WellsFargos own reputational repair. To the extent a banks reputation has suffered, then it is important to convince its customers and regulators that they have a plan to solve the problems and prevent future p roblems, he said. Hiring someone with an excellent reputation in risk management should help the banks efforts.Nortons position as an outsider will also be a plus for her, Bristow said. If this had been an internal promotion, I think it would have been difficult to say that she was coming to the job with a fresh set of eyes, he said. This way, I think people will give her the benefit of the doubt. Her toughest challenge, Bristow added, will be to think outside the box of traditional risk management, focusing not just on immediate risk or the unknowns that are known, but also on the unknown unknowns a phrase used in 2002 by then-Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld about the Iraq War.Basically, a risk officer is often faced with the impossible job of foreseeing the unforeseeable, he said.Inspiring others, solving Rubiks CubesJane Vennik first heard the laughter of Mandy Norton when they were in high school in the U.K. It was an infectious, enthusiastic laugh that you could always hea r in the common room, and I thought she must be a fun person to know. Decades later, theyve been lifelong friends, said Vennik, a medical researcher at the University of Southampton.More than 10 years after Vennik and Nortons friendship began, Steve Merritt of Charlotte, North Carolina, said he recalls the same infectious laughter when he met Norton in Charlotte.Nobody smiles or laughs mora, nobody is so genuine, said the longtime friend and banking colleague. She is one of those people who is just happy. You cant go to a meeting and not have her laugh at something. She keeps things light and is fun to be around. Once you get to know her, you realize theres nobody with a stronger character, nobody more trustworthy, nobody who has a better moral compass. Shes an inspiration in every way.One quirky inspiration, Merritt said, is Nortons ability to solve the Rubiks Cube in less than a minute, an apparent byproduct of her math skills. She could do that faster than anyone Ive ever seen, h e said. They could put me in a dungeon and tell me I cant come out until I solve it. And I would die in the dungeon.Norton reacts with characteristic modesty at the suggestion of being an inspiration to others. For her, the most inspirational role models are women who have courageously pushed boundaries, been trailblazers or taken on roles not traditionally held by women activists such as Emmeline Pankhurst and Rosa Parks, sports figures such as Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King, and political figures such as Condoleezza Rice.To be thought of as an inspiration by friends and colleagues is just extraordinarily flattering, she said. But it is a two-way street when you are fortunate enough to have built strong, meaningful relationships. I would say the same of many of my close friends and colleagues. It is humbling to know they feel Ive made some difference in their life, but I know theyve probably made a much bigger difference in mine. This article was originally published onwe llsfargo.com/stories.Fairygodboss is proud to partner with Wells Fargo.Find a job there today
